KA1 2015 Ski/Snowboarding Chamonix Placement

Following on from our successful CARVE Programmes (from 2011 to 2015), Landon Carver’s latest Erasmus + Programme with our partners UCPA will be delivered in early 2016. Selected participants will spend 30 days immersed in the running of the UCPA centre in Chamonix.

This opportunity provides funding for 9 candidates to spend 30 days working alongside their UCPA counterparts in their renowned Chamonix centre at the foot of Mont Blanc, France. Candidates will spend time experiencing the French approach to delivering outdoor adventure/education, this includes all aspects of work in the French ski centres as they shadow UCPA instructors and sit in on briefings as well as take on a variety of tasks involved in running the UCPA centre. This programme will provide candidates with practical enhancement of their existing outdoor adventure skills, and will introduced them to a new sport (ski or snowboarding).

9 candidates will be given the opportunity in staggered blocks. 3 fly out in January, 3 in February and the remaining 3 in March 2016. The funding covers all associated travel costs, insurance, some branded clothing, a subsistence amount as well as accommodation for the duration of the stay.
Participants will experience, observe and learn techniques and systems that will enhance the service they deliver in their workplaces in Ireland. Successful candidates will be scheduled to work in a number of areas of centre, such as equipment maintenance, entertainment, restaurant, reception, guest services and distribution.


During the placement participants will:

  • Be provided with a practical enhancement of their existing skills which can be transferred to their work in Ireland.
  • Enhance networking skills and build relationships with like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Increase technical ability in ski/snowboarding.
  • Experience exposure to different cultures.
  • Improve language skills.
  • Attain a Euro Pass mobility certificate.
  • Gain a QQI/FETAC Level 5 Award in Work Experience.

Participants Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support of the centre manager (cleaning the centre, reception duties, greeting guests, general office work).
  • Equipment management (covers the maintenance, distribution and repair of equipment).
  • Guest care services (establishing a good relationship with clients, ensuring they enjoy the experience).
  • Promotion of the centre and its services

Selection Requirements

  • Candidates must be currently working in the outdoor sector in an organisation involved in vocational education and training.
  • Candidates must be over 18.
  • Candidates must be put forward to the programme by their organisation who must supply Landon Carver with a letter confirming their status and stating that within their organisation they are involved in mentoring people on work placements. A sample letter can be attained from Landon Carver and must be printed on the company’s paper and signed by a senior figure in the organisation.
  • Candidates must have a keen enthusiasm for working in the outdoors.
  • Candidates must have the ability to provide references from at least three sources.
  • Candidates must hold an in-date and open EU passport.
  • Candidates must the ability and availability to travel to France for the time period specified.
  • Candidates must never have been asked by the authorities to leave France, or any of its associated territories.
  • Hold an in-date EHIC/E1-11 card (or be able to attain one in time for the placement).

While not essential it is desirable for candidates to:

  • Have language Skills in French or another European language.
  • Be able to provide Garda clearance.

Interviews will take place on the week of the 22nd – 25th Feb 2016 in Landon Carver Offices, Ground Floor, Mayoralty House, Flood Street, Galway.

Briefing will take place on the weekend of the 27th Feb 2016 in Landon Carver Offices, Galway.

N.B. All successful candidates must attend. It should take no more than a few hours.

Participant’s Final Report materials and Dissemination must be completed and returned within 30 days of their return to Landon Carver Offices, Ground Floor, Mayoralty House, Flood Street, Galway. Failure to do so will result in financial penalty’s.
